Brooke & John’s Globe-Trotting Wedding at the Adler Planetarium 05.26.12

Shortly after Brooke said “Yes” to her long-time beau’s proposal, the couple learned that John had landed a job with the Foreign Service at USAID.  His first assigned position… Cairo, Egypt, and they would be moving before the end of 2012! Brooke had always loved travel and was thrilled at the chance to accompany John on his trot across the globe. This exciting opportunity inspired their stunning travel-themed wedding at the Adler Planetarium located along the banks of beautiful Lake Michigan.

Brooke was one of the most organized brides I have had the pleasure to work with.  She and her mother, Beverly, worked tirelessly to make sure that every detail was exactly as Brooke had dreamed it would be.

Wedding morning was relaxed and began with hair styling by Gina Scalpone of Beauty on Call and makeup by Andie Cumber in Brooke’s suite at Hyatt McCormick Place. With the help of her best friends, Brooke slipped into her stunning Vera Wang gown, and her Jimmy Choo shoes covered in crystals.  I especially love the pictures that Jenn of J. Winter Photography took of this moment.

The time had come for John to see his bride for their first look. John waited patiently as Brooke took the long walk through the hotel lobby to tap him on the shoulder. Such a sweet and intimate moment!  After a sip of champagne at the bar, it was off to the Planetarium for a quick photo shoot with Jenn and the wedding party.

The weather had been beautiful all day, however just as the photoshoot began, it became incredibly blustery.  Quickly our outdoor ceremony plans changed as the décor topiaries toppled and began to roll down the lake shore! Jenn made the best of the situation and tried a few shots outside, but the wind was just too much–everything had to be brought indoors.

Despite the last minute change of plans, the Event Creative and Food For Thought teams were able to execute Plan B without issue.  Lucky for us, Plan B was stunning!  Event Creative brought the outdoors in with topiaries framing the ceremony space. The room glowed amber as Brooke and John said “I Do!” in a sweet ceremony officiated by John’s aunt, Reverend Carol Gates.

After the ceremony, the guests walked into the cocktail hour in the Welcome Gallery which can only be described as a light cave.  A slideshow of Brooke and John’s photographs was projected onto the walls.  It all had a very fun futuristic look.

As guests made their way into the reception, they found their luggage tag escort cards waiting for them next to the beautiful glow of the luminaries wrapped in maps.  The luggage tags doubled as useful and fun wedding favors!

The beautiful view of the lake and the city welcomed the guests into the gorgeous reception. Jesse at Event Creative brainstormed with Brooke and her mother to come up with the mono-floral arrangements with map and globe accents to go along with the world travel theme.  Floating balls of light and clear glass jars with candles hung over the whole space, giving the room a glowy, whimsical look!

While the guests were treated to a delicious dinner by Food For Thought, Brooke and John were honored with toasts.  Instead of a guest book, Brooke and John asked each guest to fill out predictions and place them in a time capsule to be opened and read in 10 years.  What a fun idea and great way to celebrate a decade of marriage!

Once the sun went down the subtle glow of the hanging candles created an enchanted ambiance.  Once dinner ended, the dance floor filled as The Underwater People were rockin’, playing all the hit dance tunes and some fun eighties songs as well. Everyone was singing and dancing, including the groom, caught here in this awesome photo. It looks like he’s singing “I LOVE YOU!” to his new wife!

Guests also had the chance to get silly in a photobooth!  My assistant, Sarah, and I had fun taking a moment to mug for the camera.  ShutterBooth Chicago provided copious amounts of hats, glasses, and masks to enhance the photo fun!

All in all it was a magical night with a fairy tale ending of fireworks over the lake. When I think about it, Brooke and John’s story is a bit like a fairy tale: the story of a couple in love who marry and dash of to Cairo for adventures unknown!  And just like the fairy tales, I know this couple will live happily ever after.  Congratulations Brooke and John! Five Grain Events was so honored to play a role in the adventure. I wish you many blessings and worldly adventures in your life together!
