Katie and Mike came to Five Grain Events through one of our previous couples. They were getting married at the same amazing venue – Bridgeport Art Center’s Skyline Loft – and had a similar goal: no stress! We are huge fans of the team at BAC — and the space couldn’t be a better representation of the quintessential lofted Chicago wedding.
Katie’s day started off with a fun and relaxing morning at the luxurious Langham Hotel. Her suite provided plenty of room for her and all her bridesmaids to prep for the day — from hair and makeup primping by the stellar team at Pin Me Up and Shannon O’Brien MUA, to sipping mimosas and exchanging gifts.
Meanwhile, Mike was enjoying a casual morning with his groomsmen at the Renaissance Downtown — we loved that he was close by, but ran no risk of running into his bride in the hallway!
One of my absolute favorite parts of the day is when the bride gets into her dress; transforming from a giddy fiancée to a stunning bride. The look on a father’s face never fails to bring tears to my eyes!
The Wabash Street Bridge between the two hotels provided the perfect spot for a first look, expertly planned and captured by Ann & Kam Photo & Cinema.
The wedding party loaded onto the trolley provided by Signature Transportation and made their way around the city for a few photo stops. The sunny September day made for stunning photos! They took advantage of taking some shots in the Sculpture Garden at Bridgeport Art Center before coming upstairs to prep for the ceremony.
Katie’s florist, A Vintage Bloom, created a gorgeous, lush greenery wall to act as the ceremony backdrop, which also provided a killer background for group photos and later would be used to make the head table pop.
As guests started to arrive, we made sure the wedding party was tucked away (another reason to love Skyline Loft — so many spaces to stay out of view!). Guests took their seats while music from TVK Orchestra‘s piano and violin duo set the tone. A pastor from Katie’s family church – Park Ridge Presbyterian – officiated, and before we knew it, Katie and Mike were officially married!
The celebration moved to the back of Skyline Loft for cocktails provided by Venue Logic and hors d’oeuvres from Beyond Events. Katie and Mike provided cute matchboxes for their guests, which we set on cocktail tables and around the bars. The decor inspiration for cocktail hour was heavy candlelight to create a magical glow around the space – it really looked beautiful and felt so inviting as the sun dipped below the horizon.
We loved the welcome table Katie and her mom designed — including a feather guest book pen that was used at Katie’s mom’s own wedding! Family heirlooms can be in the most unexpected forms, and make for such a personal touch on your wedding day.
One of my favorite elements of Skyline Loft is the large elevator, fit with a chandelier and penny-covered bar. Couples are always looking for unique ways to make for a fun guest experience on their short ride up from the main floor. Katie and Mike decided to have a few Instax cameras available with magnets for guests to adorn the walls with photos, making for lots of fun memories to look back on. Katie and Mike hopped in for a photo-op during cocktail hour, and it’s one of my favorite shots.
Soon it was time to open the curtains to reveal the transformation of the reception space and welcome guests to their tables. A Vintage Bloom did a gorgeous job on the centerpieces, with lush greenery, heavy candlelight, and white blooms to dress the tables.
There are not many opportunities in life to be seated in chairs adorned with gorgeous floral, so why not make the most of your wedding and decorate your Bride and Groom seats? A Vintage Bloom did a great job making Katie and Mike feel like royalty.
TVK Orchestra welcomed in the wedding party, ending with Katie and Mike who then shared their first dance as husband and wife and cut their cake from Cake Chicago. Pastor Josh gave a blessing, and dinner service began. Heartfelt toasts throughout the meal from Katie’s mom, maid of honor, and best men kept the laughter flowing and the mood light.
One of our favorite parts of weddings that include flower girls and ring bearers is seeing them hit the dance floor in full force. Katie and Mike’s nieces and nephews were no exception! They were all twists and twirls, with no problem taking center stage. TVK kept the energy high and the hits coming, while Beyond Events kept guests nourished with cake and late night snacks.
It’s always hard to see the night come to an end when the couple is having so much fun — but unfortunately, time doesn’t stop even for weddings! Guests were safely taken back to their hotels thanks to spacious buses from Signature Transportation.
Katie and Mike, it was such a pleasure working with both of you! I hope you’re enjoying your first year of married life, and we wish you many more years of happiness together!
